AirPods Pro 3 Review: Better ANC, Heart Rate and Battery

The short answer

The AirPods Pro 3 are Apple’s best earbuds for most iPhone users. They cost $249, the same as the AirPods Pro 2 cost at launch, and they bring clearly stronger noise cancellation, a heart-rate sensor for workouts, and longer battery life on a single charge. If you are buying your first pair of Pro earbuds, these are the ones to get. If you already own the AirPods Pro 2 and they still work well, you can wait.

Apple announced the AirPods Pro 3 on 9 September 2025 and released them on 19 September 2025. They still use the Apple H2 chip, so this is not a brand-new brain. The big changes are in the hardware around that chip: new drivers, new microphones, new ear tips, and new sensors.

Sound and noise cancellation

Noise cancellation is the biggest upgrade. Apple says the AirPods Pro 3 cancel up to twice as much noise as the AirPods Pro 2. Independent lab testing by SoundGuys backed that up in broad terms, measuring about 90 percent average noise reduction for the Pro 3, against about 83 percent for the Pro 2. On a plane or a busy train, the difference is easy to hear.

Sound is fuller than before. The reworked acoustic design gives deeper bass and clearer voices, and most reviewers liked the result. A few noted a slightly V-shaped sound, which means bass and treble stand out a little more than the middle. For pop, hip-hop, and podcasts, that works well. If you want a flat, neutral sound for studio work, these are not made for that.

Transparency mode also sounds more natural than on the Pro 2. It lets outside sound in when you need to hear traffic or an announcement, without the hollow feeling older earbuds sometimes had. Adaptive Audio can switch between noise cancellation and transparency on its own, based on what is happening around you.

Battery life

Battery life is better in the way that matters most. With noise cancellation on, the earbuds last up to eight hours on one charge, up from six hours on the Pro 2. That is a full workday of music and calls without going back to the case. In Transparency mode, or when using the hearing-aid feature, they can last up to 10 hours.

There is one trade-off. The case holds less total charge than before. With the case, total listening time is up to 24 hours with noise cancellation on, while the Pro 2 case reached up to 30 hours. So the earbuds last longer between charges, but the case runs out sooner. A five-minute charge in the case gives about an hour of listening, which helps on a busy day.

The case charges over USB-C, and it also works with MagSafe, Qi wireless chargers, and an Apple Watch charger. If you already use wireless iPhone chargers at home or at work, the same pads will work for the case.

Heart rate and health features

The AirPods Pro 3 are the first AirPods with a built-in heart-rate sensor. During a workout, the sensor tracks your heart rate and sends it to the Fitness app, covering more than 50 workout types. Apple says the readings are close to what an Apple Watch gives, and independent testing has found them accurate enough for most runners to leave a chest strap at home.

You need an iPhone running iOS 26 or later to use heart-rate sensing. It is a fitness feature, not a medical device, so it does not replace a doctor or a dedicated health monitor. Still, for people who work out with earbuds and no watch, it is a real reason to pick the Pro 3.

Hearing health is part of the package too. The earbuds support a Hearing Test and a hearing-aid feature in supported regions, plus hearing protection in loud places. These features were already on the Pro 2, but the longer battery in Transparency mode makes them easier to use all day.

Live Translation and smart features

Live Translation is the most eye-catching new feature. With a compatible iPhone running iOS 26, the earbuds can translate a conversation in real time, so you hear the other person in your own language. It needs an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone, and it works best in quiet places with clear speech. It is still early, but it already works well enough to be useful when travelling.

Live Translation is not exclusive to the Pro 3. The AirPods Pro 2 support it too with the same iPhone and software, so do not buy the Pro 3 for this feature alone.

Other smart features carry over: Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking, Conversation Awareness that lowers the volume when someone talks to you, automatic switching between Apple devices, hands-free Siri, and Find My support. The case now has a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, which makes precision finding more accurate when you lose it.

Fit, comfort and durability

Apple redesigned the fit. The Pro 3 come with five sizes of foam-infused silicone tips, from XXS to L, instead of the four silicone sizes on the Pro 2. The foam gives a tighter seal, which helps both noise cancellation and bass. Most people find a good fit, but some owners say the firmer tips feel tight over long wear. Try all the sizes before you decide, and use the ear-tip fit test on your iPhone.

Durability is better too. The earbuds and the case are rated IP57 for dust and water resistance, up from IP54 on the USB-C version of the Pro 2. That means they can handle sweat, rain, and a short dip in water. They are a safer pick for running and gym sessions than the older model.

There is one problem worth knowing about. Some owners have reported a static or hissing sound with noise cancellation or Transparency on and no music playing. It does not affect every unit, and Apple has not given a single fix that works for everyone. If you buy a pair, test them in a quiet room during the return window.

AirPods Pro 3 vs AirPods Pro 2

The two models share the H2 chip and the same $249 launch price, but the differences are clear. The Pro 3 cancel more noise, last longer on one charge, add heart-rate sensing, and resist water better. The Pro 2 keep a bigger total battery with the case, and their softer silicone tips suit some ears better. Apple no longer sells the Pro 2 new, so the choice today is usually between the Pro 3 at full price or a discounted Pro 2 from another seller.

Here is the quick comparison. The Pro 3 offer up to eight hours of listening with noise cancellation on, against six hours on the Pro 2. Total time with the case is up to 24 hours on the Pro 3 and up to 30 hours on the Pro 2. Water resistance is IP57 on the Pro 3 and IP54 on the Pro 2. Only the Pro 3 have a heart-rate sensor and five foam-infused tip sizes.

Who should buy them, and who should skip them

Buy the AirPods Pro 3 if you are new to the Pro line, if you travel or commute through loud places, if you work out and want heart-rate tracking without a watch, or if your old earbuds are dying. The stronger noise cancellation and the longer single-charge battery make a real difference every day.

Wait if you already own the AirPods Pro 2 and are happy with them. The sound and the smart features are close, Live Translation works on both, and the Pro 2 case lasts longer in total. Skip them if you mainly use Android. The earbuds work as basic Bluetooth earbuds on Android, but most of the features that make them special, including heart-rate sensing and Live Translation, need an iPhone.

For the full spec list, check Apple’s official AirPods Pro 3 page before you buy, since prices and sale offers change often. The $249 price is the official price, but the earbuds are often on sale for around $199 to $229.

Verdict

The AirPods Pro 3 are not a revolution, but they are the best Pro earbuds Apple has made.
